So the past few weeks have been rather exciting in terms of my freelancing work. At the end of July one of the books I helped edit, Haven: A Stranger Magic by D.C. Akers, broke the Amazon best seller list for fantasy anthologies and short stories! And yesterday it was in the top 5!
Haven tells the story of Sam and his sister Sarah and the ordinary lives that they lead. At least they were ordinary until strange things start happening to them, strange people start following them, and strange secrets are revealed that could change their lives forever.
I have been working with D.C. Akers, for the past few months and I have really enjoyed getting to know him and his story.
I find it is always important for an author, especially a YA author, to establish a connection between their characters and the reader, and I found that connection with Sam and Sarah within the first few chapters of the story. I was immediately invested in the characters and wanted to know what they would do next. D.C. Akers has a unique tone to his writing that is very funny at times, but he does not shy away from the more serious or dark aspects of life (especially in the second book which we are working on now).
I also found Sam’s world to be very real. In many ways it will be relatable to readers. Sam goes to school, hangs out with his best friend, and bickers with his mean older sister. But in many other ways Sam’s life is anything but ordinary, which draws the reader in deeper to the story itself. Haven is a fun read with many twists and turns along the way.
I feel honored and blessed to have worked on the book in the capacity that I have. Congratulations to D.C. Akers on his success! And if anyone is looking for a fun summer read they should check out Haven: A Stranger Magic!
